More than eight million households have been stuck on the expensive standard tariffs of one of the Big Six energy suppliers for at least three years, according to Ofgem data. The two biggest suppliers had the highest proportions, with some 43 per cent of British Gas customers and 44 per cent of SSE’s with standard credit meters having remained on the default tariffs since April 2014 or earlier. First Utility, the biggest independent supplier, said that the 8 million households could each have saved an average of £453 over the past three years by switching to the cheapest tariff available from their existing Big Six supplier.
