European utility giant Engie is in a race against time to restart four of its struggling Belgian nuclear power reactors before the end of the year, raising the prospect of knock-on price rises in the UK this winter. French-headquartered Engie, formerly known as GDF Suez, warned on Tuesday that its forecast earnings for the year, of around €9.3bn, are “based notably on the assumption of a restart of Belgian nuclear units.” Six of Belgium’s seven aging nuclear reactors are beset by problems, which has raised concerns of higher winter power prices in Belgium, France and the UK.
