Scotland’s ski resorts will be driven out of business within a few decades because of climate change, according to a report that recommends that they develop mountain biking instead. It follows research suggesting that Scotland will be 2-3C warmer by 2060 and up to 5C warmer by 2100 – enough to prevent snow settling anywhere for long, even in the Cairngorms, Britain’s coldest mountains. “Snow days have fallen to as low as 15 days in recent years due to unfavourable weather conditions,” according to the study from the University of the West of Scotland. “The industry is threatened by global warming, with the Meteorological Office’s prediction that the industry could disappear in Scotland in the next 40-50 years.”

The Scottish Greens have warned that Brexit is a “distraction” diverting politicians away from climate change, which they believe is the “most important” issue in the world. Maggie Chapman, the party’s co-convener, said there is just over a decade for politicians to act to prevent “climate breakdown”. While she insisted her party would “fight this Tory Brexit all the way” she added: “One the aims of Brexit is to distract us from the important issues of the day.” She told the Scottish Green Party conference in Edinburgh: “The most important thing in the world is that we act now on the environmental and economic crises.
