Climate campaigners who have brought chaos to parts of central London appear to be split amid confusion over whether planned protests will go ahead. There have been at least 830 arrests as members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) continued to demonstrate at Waterloo Bridge, Parliament Square and Marble Arch in central London. The group had initially vowed to press on with protests until April 29 and officials fear that the disruption could hit next Sunday’s London Marathon. However some XR insiders appeared to be pressing for a retreat from the streets. Farhana Yamin, a member of the group’s political committee, said that she wanted to prove that the organisation was “a cohesive long-term, global force, not some flash in the pan.”

Chris Packham has called on his fellow TV nature presenters to join the climate protests blocking streets in London and other cities. Packham, who joined protesters in Oxford Circus last week and gave a speech from the pink boat blocking the junction, said it was “disappointing” not to see more TV and radio presenters offering support.

Governments will no longer be able ignore the impending climate and ecological crisis, Greta Thunberg, the teenage climate activist, has told Extinction Rebellion protesters gathered at Marble Arch in London. In a speech on Sunday night where she took aim at politicians who have for too long been able to satisfy demands for action with “beautiful words and promises”, the Swedish 16-year-old said humanity was sitting at a crossroads, but that those gathered had chosen which path they wish to take.

Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach – celebrated around the world for its both it eye-grabbing beauty and decades-old surf culture – could be under water in a matter of years as as result of rising sea levels triggered by climate change, politicians have warned. In the latest alert about the threat to the shoreline of Honolulu, located on the island of Oahu, legislators have said the city could start to experience frequent flooding within the next 15 to 20 years. They have warned such a development would have a devastating affect on tourism, on which much of the state relies. Hawaiian politicians are demanding efforts to try and protect the vulnerable shoreline begin now.
