Green energy provider Ecotricity has today launched what it is hailing as the world’s first ‘vegan electricity’ tariff, in a bid to highlight the energy sector’s reliance on power that is generated from meat and diary industry by-products. The company said many vegan and vegetarian households are unaware that a chunk of the power they use could be provided by renewable energy projects that rely on animal-based feedstocks. For example, a number of anaerobic digestion projects make use of by products from the dairy industry to generate biogas, while other projects make use of slurry from livestock farms or dead salmon from fish farms. More broadly, thermal energy-from-waste plants could make use of waste meat and other products.
