Bradwell
RESIDENTS are being urged to make their views heard about the future of nuclear power in Bradwell. Exhibitions and a public discussion are being held in the district this week. Maldon Town hall in Market Hill, Maldon will host an open exhibition on Friday December 11 from 8.30am until 6.30pm. A similar event will be held at Bradwell village hall in South Street, Bradwell, on Saturday December 12 from 9am until 4pm. A public discussion will also be held on Saturday from 9am until noon at Maldon Town FC in Park Drive, Maldon.

Low Level Waste
There is a growing row over a proposal for Britain’s first landfill dump for low-level nuclear waste. Augean plan to accommodate the waste at an existing landfill site near the village of King’s Cliffe in Northamptonshire. Matthew Kirk from protest group, King’s Cliffe WasteWatchers, insists it could be a health risk. “We’re being told this radiation is low-level. Low-level doesn’t mean safe. Zero radiation level is safe.” But East Midlands Minister, Phil Hope, whose constituency includes King’s Cliffe, says: “We’ve got to do something with the waste.”

Nuclear Research
SHEFFIELD is set to become the hub of the UK’s expanding civil nuclear industry, Parliament has been told.
Business secretary Lord Mandelson told the House of Lords that South Yorkshire is in line to benefit from “new jobs, new industries and new ties to the global and European economies”.

Dounreay
An hotel is one of a number of suggestions from the public about how the former atomic research station at Dounreay could be used. Others include a recreation centre and a tourist attraction although the company that runs it believes it might just end up as a heritage site.

Iran
Iran’s nuclear chief says that his country needs 20 industrial-scale uranium enrichment facilities, a dramatic expansion in defiance of United Nations demands to halt the programme. Ali Akbar Salehi’s announcement comes days after the government approved a plan to build 10 new plants.
