OLDBURY Power Station has shut down reactor one for essential work. Bosses at the station confirmed that reactor one had been manually shut down yesterday Thursday, July 14 after problems with the fuelling machine.

Sellafield
The Sellafield nuclear plant has long been a worry to successive Irish governments. As it sits on the coast of west Cumbria on the far side of the Irish Sea, in reality its not very far from Ireland in nuclear terms. The worry level now looks poised for elevation. Irish environment minister Phil Hogan has asked the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland to examine the impact of British government plans for eight new nuclear power plants. The new plants could be up and humming by 2025.

A second shipment of radioactive waste is set to be transported from Sellafield to Japan on schedule despite the country still suffering the after-effects of Marchs deadly tsunami. Three flasks of Highly Active Waste (HAW) are currently in a marshalling area at the west Cumbrian site, waiting to be carried by rail and sea to the Far East.

HORIZON, the venture company put together by German power giants RWE NPower and E:ON to build nuclear power plants in the UK including Wylfa remain bullish that the projects will come about. Last week rumours circulated in the German press that the companies have lost the will to continue with the project. Horizon and their parent companies refute the allegation. The claims were made on July 4 in newspaper the Sueddeutsch Zeitung. It claimed that building new nuclear plant at Wylfa and Oldbury in Gloucestershire would be unlikely due to the costs.

Fukushima Prefecture vowed to shift away from nuclear power plants in its vision compiled Friday for reconstruction after the March 11 quake and tsunami.The about-face came after Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s declaration Wednesday of pursuing a society free from dependence on nuclear energy and is expected to affect the policies of other prefectures that host atomic plants.
