Energy companies are being offered a hidden subsidy to build new nuclear power stations through the proposed funding of waste disposal, says the government’s former adviser on the issue. Gordon MacKerron, who until recently chaired the committee on radioactive waste management, attacked as “frankly not credible” ministerial assurances that operators of the new reactors would meet the full costs of waste disposal.

British Energy, the Scottish-based nuclear generator, saw its share price drop yesterday after it said takeover proposals put forward for the company so far were below Friday’s closing share price and did not represent value for shareholders.

Nuclear Skills
The UK Government is to relax immigration rules in order to fill jobs in the nuclear power industry, it emerged last night. The Home Office claimed that adding the jobs to the so-called “national shortage list” would help the country get the “right skills”. It will mean some 27 employment categories can be filled by workers from anywhere in the world.

The historic civil nuclear deal with India that George W. Bush saw as one of his signature foreign policy achievements is almost certainly dead, according to senior US officials. Asked whether it was now impossible to push the deal through in the dying days of Mr Bush’s term, one administration official told the Financial Times: “That is probably correct.”
